Newsletter sign-up

Please SIGN UP for the Climate Action Now newsletter. This is the best way to stay up to date with what’s happening. The newsletter is distributed through your email twice a month—or more frequently as events require. Each issue contains action alerts, announcements of upcoming events, links to work our allies are doing, and stunning photographs by Rene Theberge. These are delivered through MailChimp, with a link to view the contents online instead. Back issues are available in the Newsletter page.

Purge Palantir campaign

Palantir is an unaccountable big tech corporation that provides the software that is vacuuming up our data to use in everything from denial management for health insurance companies to the horrors of the current deportation system to lethal and extrajudicial drone strikes.

Palantir wants to monopolize and weaponize surveillance to maximize profits for clients and increase the state’s surveillance capabilities—all at the expense of our privacy.

But we’re fighting back: Click here to join the nationwide campaign to defend our privacy and stop Palantir.

Wildlands Campaign

Our Wildlands Campaign is committed to increasing the amount of permanently protected Wildlands in Massachusetts and New England. To that end, the Campaign is identifying land that meets the criteria for Wildlands and should be recorded on the interactive Wildlands Map. Further, we are taking other key educational, legislative, administrative, and collaborative actions.

No Toxic Biomass

The No Biomass campaign has a dedicated website. Go to NoToxicBiomass.org to find the most up-to-date info about the campaign!

Burning woody biomass to generate electricity is even more polluting than burning most forms of coal. So electricity generated by burning woody biomass should not be eligible for rate payer subsidies meant for “clean” energy. Provisions ending this “biomass loophole” were stripped from the final climate bill. This means that Municipal Light Plants (town- and city-owned electric companies known as MLP’s) still qualify for rate payer funded subsidies when purchasing electricity from biomass plants. Until we close this loophole, incentives for wood-burning power plants in Massachusetts and neighboring states remain.

The active MLP loophole means that the proposed biomass plant for Springfield remains a threat as Palmer Renewable continues to appeal their permit denials in the Massachusetts court system. And polluting biomass facilities from neighboring states including CT, VT, and NH, are still eligible to receive Massachusetts ratepayer clean energy dollars

Miyawaki Forest Project

Everyone is welcome to get involved with the Climate Action Now Miyawaki Forest Project!

The Miyawaki method is a technique for cultivating fast-growing tiny forests composed of dense plantings of native trees and understory plants. Before planting, soil is enriched with locally-available organic matter. The forests are weeded and watered for only the first three years. These little forests of native trees grow faster, and remove more carbon than trees planted in traditional ways. We are currently evaluating sites for our demonstration project. Once we have selected the site we will need many hands to help us create and nurture our Miyawaki Forest. You can contact us at [email protected]

CREATE – Farmer Solidarity

CREATE aims to build a strong network of community members (Farm Friends) who can provide climate resilience support to local farms. This includes helping farmers affected by climate disasters, assisting with emergency efforts, and supporting long-term resilience planning, with an emphasis on solidarity and relationship-building within the community.  Learn more.

Racism, White Supremacy & Climate Justice Group

We see climate change and racism as deeply interconnected. We are learning about these connections, sharing our learning, assisting all CAN groups to bring a racial lens to their work. We assist CAN in building alliances with people and groups of color, so we all can work together for climate and racial justice. This group meets once a month. If you are interested in this working group, please contact: Russ Vernon-Jones [email protected] and view our Climate Justice page.
